The sale of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

As required by European Directive 89/686/CEE (n°L399/18) and European Standards, every item of PPE sold must have a user notice and, for ropes, markings at each end.

The sale of a section of rope cut from a reel represents an alteration to an item of  PPE.   This must be reconformed  as required by standard EN 365.
To do this you must duplicate the indications given on the reel onto each section of rope cut from it  (changing the length indicated accordingly), and giving the purchaser the user-notice for the cut length of rope.

In order to facilitate the printing of this notice, BEAL has created an identification service, using the individual number present on each reel, allowing easy identification and print-out of the notice.
You will also find a batch of labels, specific to each BEAL rope reel, pre-prepared, which you may use to record the required markings on the ends of the rope.

BEAL’s solution for the sale of rope cut from a reel

In order to facilitate the sale of a BEAL rope cut from a reel, BEAL offers the following protocol:

Marking the section of rope

Cut the length of rope from the BEAL reel
Complete two BEAL end-of-rope labels, supplied with the reel, using the information marked on the side of the reel, using a ball-point pen (Write slowly without applying pressure):

Single rope

Half rope
Static rope

Example of an end of rope label completed by yourself

Unpeel the label and fix it around 5mm from the end of the rope, white part first, finally the extension in transparent vinyl, which  forms a protective cover over the writing
Repeat the operation at the other end of the rope.

Printing the user notice

a) To sell to an individual
If selling to an individual, who is not obliged to control his PPE:  the individual number is not essential on the notice, which you may thus print directly from the site www.beal-planet.com, using the  individual number of the product sold.

From www.beal-planet.com, site, select " Climbing and mountaineering ropes"  :

Click on the icon "user notice" corresponding to the off cut rope :

Then click on the print icon to obtain the user notice to give to your client :

b) To sell to a professional (club, centre…)
In the case of sale to a professional, it is essential to understand that they have an obligation to manage and control every item of PPE that they have in use. (Standard XPS72 701)  You thus print them a notice from the site www.beal-services.info where the individual number of the rope appears, in order to guarantee traceability.

Go to www.beal-services.info, identify yourself as a PPE re-seller :

Click on the tab I identify my PPE and enter the number of the reel (or of the cut rope without your extension identifier) :

At the foot of the following page, you will find the rope’s notice, click :

Then click "print" to obtain the user notice to give to your client :

According to Standard EN365, an item of PPE must in no case be modified without explicit pre-authorization by the manufacturer.

Standard EN 365 - Section 4: Requirements – Para 4.2: Instructions for use:
«The instructions for use shall include […] warning against making any alterations or additions to the equipment without the manufacturer’s prior written consent, and that any repair shall only be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s procedures

Since the cutting of a reel of rope into multiple lengths constitutes a modification of this PPE, it must be clearly authorised in writing in the notice for the reel by the manufacturer.

Consequently BEAL specifies in its user notice, supplied with reels of dynamic and semi-static ropes, that it is possible to modify a Beal rope by cutting the reel into multiple lengths, provided that the recording of the markings at each end of each section of rope is made in conformance to the instructions given.

BEAL user-notice for a dynamic or semi-static rope – Paragraph:  Maintenance:
« If a rope is cut into multiple lengths, record this appropriately on each end marking on each rope length. »
