HOW TO STORE A ROPE?

• It is strongly advised that you store your ropes in the shade, away from moisture or any heat sources. (This avoids any unnecessary exposure to UV).

The temperature of the storage area should never exceed 80°C, and the storage time should never exceed 15 years.

NB. When storing a rope it is preferable to keep it loose in a bag (with the ends exposed), rather than coiled, to avoid twists and knots.

HOW TO WASH AND DRY A ROPE?

• To wash a rope, immerse in clean cold water (less than 30°C) and use a mild detergent (powder for delicate fabrics or Beal Rope Cleaner) and end by brushing with a synthetic brush (or the Beal Rope Brush).

To machine wash, slip the rope into a pillowcase or similar fabric bag and wash at less than 30°C on ‘delicate wash’. Never use pressure cleaners which could force dirt (Eg sand grains) into the rope and cut the fibres.

Drying should be done in the shade away from direct sources of heat. (For preference hung up in circulating air).

HOW TO GET RID OF SHEATH SLIPPAGE?

• If, after intensive use in particular conditions, such as in-situ use for top-roping on a climbing wall, or use in particularly wet conditions, sheath slippage is produced, it is necessary to remove it.

The way this is done is simply to slide the excess sheath off the core and re-seal the rope.

Cut the sealed ends off the rope with a knife or scissors, then work the excess sheath towards each end from the mid-point.
When the excess sheath is worked beyond the core at the ends, cut and seal with a hot knife. (Replacing the rope identification tapes!)
